First Impressions of the Nintendo Switch

By Trevor Harley | March 5, 2017 |

The Nintendo Switch is finally out and I have had the pleasure of playing it over this past weekend. It was really great that Nintendo decided to launch the Switch worldwide on a Friday, instead of a Sunday as they have in the past. I was lucky enough to receive my Nintendo Switch and my copy of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – Master Edition on launch day after pre-ordering online from EB Games. Others were not so lucky, including Taylor, and won’t…

How to Clean Video Game Cartridges

By Trevor Harley | February 24, 2017 |

Everybody who grew up on cartridge based video games remembers having trouble getting them to work, especially those who had a Nintendo Entertainment System. With the growing popularity of retro gaming a lot of gamers have decided to pull out their old systems again only to find that they don’t work. They plug the cartridge in and get a jumbled mess of graphics or a blank screen and think something is broken, especially when blowing in the cartridge doesn’t fix the issue. What these people…

Retro Game Shops Map

By Trevor Harley | February 12, 2017 |

Have you ever been travelling somewhere and wondered if there are any good retro video game shops in the area to check out? I sure have. I have spent hours searching google for game shops in different areas and writing down addresses when travelling for whatever reason. I thought it would save time and help gamers and collectors everywhere to just have one map with all known retro game shops on it so that we could quickly check whatever city we are in. The map…

The Different Iterations of the Super Game Boy

By Trevor Harley | February 5, 2017 |

In June of 1994 Nintendo released a piece of hardware that would change how people played their portable Nintendo games at home. It was called the Super Game Boy and it allowed consumers to play their Game Boy titles on their televisions by putting real Game Boy hardware into a SNES cartridge. Then in late January of 1998 Nintendo released a new version of the hardware exclusively in Japan called the Super Game Boy 2. Which Super Game Boy provides the best experience for playing Game Boy games…

NES Classic Edition Review

By Trevor Harley | January 29, 2017 |

Nintendo released their first plug ‘n play console, The NES Classic Edition, on November 23rd, 2016 and now that I have had some time to play around with it I’ve got some things to say. HARDWARE Yes, the NES Classic Edition was and is still nearly impossible to get a hold of. Let’s just get that right out of the way. Nintendo vastly underestimated the demand for this product and the online stock was gobbled up in only a few minutes. Fortunately for me, I…

The Sharp Twin Famicom

By Trevor Harley | January 18, 2017 |

In 1986 Sharp produced their own version of the Nintendo Entertainment System for the Japanese gaming market with an official license from Nintendo. What they came up with was a new version of the console combining the Famicom and Famicom Disk System together in one neat package. They called it the Sharp Twin Famicom, it came in three different colour configurations and it has some advantages over Nintendo’s own original hardware. Sharp was able to add convenience for Nintendo fans in Japan by making it so that…

Gun-Nac Review – NES

By Trevor Harley | December 29, 2016 |

Gun-Nac is a fast paced, action packed, vertical scrolling shoot-em-up that was published by ASCII in North America for the NES and released in September of 1991. It was developed by a company called Compile which I had never heard of before this game but it seems they favoured the shoot-em-up genre. They were the company behind other notable shoot-em-ups such as Zanac and the Spriggan games. I normally don’t enjoy shoot-em-ups very much but this is one that hooked me, I couldn’t put the controller down.…

Paper Mario: Color Splash Review – Wii U

By Trevor Harley | November 25, 2016 |

The latest installment in the Paper Mario series is out now on Wii U and I just finished playing it, so let’s dive right in. Released on October 7th 2016, this game appeared in my mailbox at just the right time. I had no long games on the go and I was feeling ready to jump into something completely new, and this game is certainly completely new. It takes the Paper Mario series in a new direction, different than anything I have played before. A HILARIOUS EXPERIENCE…
